Growing herbs from seed.
Fresh herbs are among the easiest plants to grow, making them perfect for beginners.
Basic steps
- 1
Fill a small pot with quality seed-starting mix.
- 2
Plant seeds according to the depth listed on the packet.
- 3
Water gently so the seeds settle in.
- 4
Keep the soil moist — like a wrung-out sponge — while they germinate.
- 5
Place in bright sunlight or under a grow light for 12–16 hours a day.
- 6
Thin seedlings once they have two sets of true leaves.
- 7
Harvest regularly once the plants are established.
Example: Basil
- Loves warmth and full sun — a south-facing window is ideal.
- Pinch out the top leaves to encourage bushier growth.
- Never let it flower — snip flower buds off to keep the leaves tender.

Frequently asked questions
Can I grow herbs indoors year-round?
Yes. With a sunny window or an LED grow light, most culinary herbs will happily grow indoors through every season.
How often should I water?
Check the top of the soil daily. Water when the top ~1 cm feels dry. Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, thyme, sage) prefer to dry out more between waterings.
Do I need special soil?
For starting seeds, use a seed-starting mix. Once transplanted, a light indoor potting mix works well for most herbs.
